Zither Music adds 2nd 'best of show' award
Zither Music Company has again won a prestigious “best of show” award from the National Association of Music Manufacturers.
Brenham-based Zither won the award for its cello stand during NAMM’s national convention held this weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
The company, owned by Tony Meeks, won the same award for its handmade guitar stand at the 2015 convention in Los Angeles.
“It’s unprecedented, winning best of show two years in a row,” Meeks said. “Some people have worked their whole careers to win best of show one time.”
This year’s show had 517 exhibitors.
    Meeks credited his employees.
“I’ve got the most incredible guys working here,” he said. “Just phenomenal guys. They’re the ones doing it.”
Meeks said Zither Music added a cello stand to its line of products about six months ago.
The company now has stands for 12 different instruments, ranging from ukuleles to saxophones. All are handcrafted, with many finding their way into homes as elegant pieces of furniture, said Meeks.
“People are not buying that cheap Chinese junk,” he said. “These look like a piece of art.”
Meeks said he is looking to expand his operation, converting what is now the company’s manufacturing/shipping site on Blue Bell Road to shipping only and moving production to another site.
At the NAMM convention, Zither signed up with some major companies interested in its products, he said.
That includes Guitar Center, the world’s largest retailer of musical instruments and accessories, and Fender guitars.
“My hope was we’d sign a few dealers,” said Meeks. “We’ve got some big name contracts.”
