    New homes pace building permits

    The city of Brenham issued more than $2.6 million in building permits during May, the bulk of that coming from new homes.

    The 38 permits issued last month for new construction, renovations and additions totaled $2,611,976.

    May’s permits brought 2017 to 257 permits totaling $38,195,225.

    Both are significantly higher than 2016’s 194 permits totaling $30,797,231 during the same period.

    Single-family homebuilding boomed during May, with 16 permits totaling $2,103,662 issued.

    For the year, 51 permits for new homes ($6,815,496) have been issued, compared to 35 permits ($2,995,322) during the same period last year.

    Only one permit for new commercial construction was issued, that for $12,000.

    A $300,000 renovation permit was issued for the law offices of Ballard & Fleetwood at 200 E. Alamo St.

    Other permits issued in May were:

    • Residential additions — Six permits, $29,850.

    • Residential renovations — Six permits, $12,950.

    • Commercial renovations — Six permits, $409,314.

    • Commercial additions — Three permits, $44,200.
