Contract awarded for Highway 36 project
Work is expected to begin in February on widening of a dangerous stretch of the Highway 36 Loop.

The Texas Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to add two lanes to the Highway 36 Loop between the U.S. 290 West cloverleaf and Business 36 North.

The road that will be improved is currently a two-lane, undivided highway with no turn lanes. It has had a number of fatal accidents over the years.

It will be improved to a four-lane divided highway with a grass median.

Two new bridges will also be added.

Mark Shafer, resident engineer with TxDOT, said the contract was awarded to Angel Brothers Enterprises, the low bidder at $14.3 million.

“We haven’t had our reconstruction meeting yet, but we’re anticipating (construction to begin) sometime in February,” said Shafer.

The contract has a 21-month completion period, said Shafer.

The project was one of the top priorities in TxDOT’s Long Range Rural Transportation Plan.
