    Building permits sky at $5.7 million for August
    The city of Brenham issued more than $5.7 million in building permits in August, including a $2.25 million expansion project for an existing business.
    A total of 38 permits were issued last month for new construction, renovations and additions, totaling $5,724,911.

    That brought the year-to-date total to 268 permits and $38,537,645.
    Through August last year, the city had issued 212 permits totaling $22,812,585.
    The largest single permit last month was for Del Sol Food Co.’s $2,250,000 expansion in the Brenham Business Center.

    Blinn College also took out a $714,000 permit for batting cages being constructed as part of its new Doyle Coatney Athletic Training Facility.
    The 11,184 complex will be located beside the Brenham campus tennis courts and will include indoor batting cages for baseball and softball, as well as a weight room and a meeting room.
    Homebuilding continues at a higher pace than last year. Ten permits ($919,520) were issued in August for new residences.
    Those brought the yearly total so far to 57 homes ($4,996,470). Through August last year, 35 permits ($3,361,078) were issued for new homes.
    Other permits issued last month were:
    • Residential renovations — One permit, $4,250.
    • Residential additions — Five permits, $10,895.
    • Multi-family renovations — Two permits, $1,179,000 (includes a permit for a $1,178,000 renovation of an apartment complex in the 800 block of West Jefferson Street).
    • New commercial projects — Seven permits, $834,799.
    • Commercial renovations — Five permits, $188,129.
    • Commercial additions — Seven permits, $2,587,818.
    One permit was issued for a commercial demolition project.
